This play dough is what I used to play with as a child. My mom usually kept a Tupperware container of it in our refrigerator and it was there for to me to play with whenever I wanted to create something. Fast forward to my years as a mom to youngsters, and it became a staple for my kiddos too. It’s easy to make, uses pantry staples, and in this time of being at home, especially for families with younger kids, I thought it would be a good “recipe” to share. Truth be told, there’s something kind of therapeutic to squishing this dough between your fingers and hands…so if you don’t have kids around, but still want to make up a batch for yourself, I won’t tell! One note! If you have more than 1 child, you may want to make up a double batch and keep each child’s dough separate from each other. Also, make sure you wash your hands after playing with the dough….the salt can be drying to your skin.
Pantry Play Dough
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. Cream of Tartar (do not leave out)
1 TBSP. vegetable oil
1 cup cold water
Stir together ingredients in medium saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly. Cook until no longer glossy It will start to ball up as you stir. Once it’s a ball of dough, remove from heat and allow to cool. Knead the dough and divide in half. Add a few food coloring drops to each half to tint and knead the color through. You can add a teaspoon from a gelatin packet if you want to scent the dough.(but remember, it’s not edible!) Store in container or resealable baggie in your refrigerator. Should last for several months…scent will dissipate, add more occasionally to maintain scent.
