I’m in awe of people who claim they LOVE to organize. I just don’t get it. There are a million other things I would choose to do with my time (bake, go to the beach, hang with my family, write this blog) over labeling bins, purging drawers and color coding a calendar. I do these things, mind you, but they really give me no joy. I do it, begrudgingly, to keep our family in some kind of a rhythm.

I admit, I’m a really good procrastinator…and that my friends, is where organization often gets away from me. I let too many bills stack up because I can always go through them tomorrow. I have too many sweaters to fit in my drawers…but do I clean them out? NOoooooo!! I paid good money for those sweaters and I’m not giving them away! What? Am I wearing them?…well, no, but I spent good money on them! Oh, the dumb ways I rationalize to avoid picking up. The piles of clutter accumulate because I don’t feel like dealing with it when I should, then the piles become bigger and it feels too overwhelming to tackle. Can anyone else relate?

So here’s what I have learned for myself (and my husband’s sanity). Do one small organizing task a day. Don’t look at EVERYTHING that needs to be straighten up or cleaned out or folded. Pick one chore and complete the task. Tackle it start to finish, no breaks, just get it done. Oh! The feeling of accomplishment! And if you decide to revel in that feeling for the rest of the day, GREAT! If cleaning or picking up wasn’t as bad as expected, then find another drawer or chore to complete. Then do another task the next day, and basically, rinse and repeat. It’s the idea that doing a small thing each day to keep your home picked up, cleaned and decluttered is a lot easier than finding the willpower to tackle the masses.
Here are some of the easiest things that need tackling and are a great start to the new year:
Socks!!!
Dump those sock drawers and start matching! If they have holes or are stretched out, get rid of them. If you have any singles, keep a couple to use as dust rags. I love to use a fluffy sock over my hand to dust home decor items like vases, collectibles, candles and lamps.

Let’s spice it up!
I love a spice drawer. One spot where I can find what I’m looking for in a neat and organized way. Some folks like to alphabetize their spices…my brain doesn’t work that way. Unless it’s a staple spice you use often (like black pepper or garlic powder) always buy the smallest size jar you can get away with. The bigger container for the cheap price isn’t going to do you any good if you only use that spice a few times a year. It will lose its flavor over time, so you’ll end up throwing it away.

Books, books, books….
I may not have the time to read a lot of novels, but I always seem to have time to thumb through a cookbook. I should probably whittle this collection down a bit more, but since every book has an upright place, I feel good about how this looks. It’s hard not to reminisce when looking through books, isn’t it? But if they’ve served you well, be it cookbooks, novels, travel books or children’s stories, there are many less fortunate families and schools who could be served by your donations. Our neighborhood started a “free library” box and many senior living facilities welcome donations too. Start by filling 1 box to donate…and if it was easier than you thought, push yourself to fill a second box. And don’t forget to drop it off for donation!

Medications
Time to go through your medicine cabinets and find all of your expired medications. Then, make a list of what you need to replace so you’ll have that list ready for your next trip to the store. Check with your local agencies for recommendations on best ways to dispose of certain medications.

Beauty products and brushes
All good things must come to an end…including the life span of your favorite beauty products. Yes, they expire, but did you know that the FDA doesn’t require companies to put expiration dates on their products (except sunscreen and some acne products). How do you know when it’s time to dump? Mascara and liquid eyeliners should only be kept for 3 months. Most of your other skin care and cosmetics are good for a year…some things like pencil eye/lip liner and powder based products could last a little longer. If you ever notice a difference in smell, texture or color, it’s time to throw out! And don’t forget to give your makeup brushes a good wash. I use my Purity cleanser by Philosophy to clean my brushes and then let them air dry. You should do this more than once a year (more like once a month!) so consider this a little reminder 🙂 I always like to clean out my makeup at the beginning of the year, because I feel like getting rid of old makeup pushes me to try a little something new in the new year!

You did it!!
Now that wasn’t soooo bad, was it?? A few easy tasks to get your home a little more organized for the rest of the year. If you’re really inspired, you might want to check out my Let’s Get Organized blog. And I’ve put together a collection of organizing must haves too. Let me know any easy organizing tips you have in the comment section below! And as always, thanks so much for taking the time to stop by.

I am an organizing nut. I love to have my closet set up by color, type of clothing, and frequency of use. I go through my closet 2 x a year for a review of what I have. My rule is this: if an item in the closet isn’t worn within a year, out it goes. Books are no issue as I don’t collect them. The kitchen ideas you gave can help me, for sure. So thank you for the tips but this is something I like doing in my home. I do feel accomplished after I go thru some part of the house and get it all organized.

I loved this email. The part about the cookbooks hit home! Lately, since I’m home more, I’ve been going through my cookbooks, which also include my late dads collection! I have been taking one day a week, going through the cookbooks. I photocopy the recipes I love or want to try and then I get ride of the book by putting it aside to donate or take it to the library. I also have been scaling down recipe clippings from magazines and tossing the ones I know I will never try. I also bought a binder from Amazon (Susan Branch home made recipe book) to place the magazine recipes that I like and want to keep for my daughters. It’s sort of a scrapbook, recipe library all in one. Hope This helps

I can relate; Theres always tomorrow. I have piles of books everywhere and

Great ideas Jill. I feel guilty every time I start to clean and reorganize bedroom closets. I have many boxes of family pictures, poetry , and hand made drawings from my grandchildren that are stored away. I start to clean and reorganize but i get so sidetracked going through all the memories stored in those boxes. Ugh! But this is a new year, and I’ll do it, one box at a time! But that’s only one closent, so many more to go thru. I did buy a TSV, collapsible storage containers,4 sets, so I am determined to get those clients organized. Sad part about the clutter is it’s all mine. Did I just write that??? Its true, kids are grown and homes of their own and hubby’s clutter is in his garage. Him, think I might have to send you before and after photos! Thanks for all your great ideas!😊

Well I started with the kitchen drawers. Did 3 of them start to finish, including spices. 3 more o go. That was about 3 weeks ago so I might be on a roll. Next week might be a good time to get back at it.

Thanks for this great post, I did most of these ideas last week before I went back to work at school. I have a really had time getting rid of my books, so I give away the books I didn’t like, sometimes I don’t even finish those!!

Awesome ideas Jill. I have OCD so I am constantly organizing. I do not like things that are cluttered. Lol. The one thing I need to do is the sock drawer. You inspired me. Gonna get it done tomorrow! The I will clean makeup brushes. Not disciplined about that. May do that tomorrow also. Thanks!

I posted this on Facebook on January 7, 2020.
My mantra for 2020:
If you don’t know where to put it,
don’t keep it.
If you don’t know what to do with it,
get rid of it.
Donate or Discard!
Decluttering is not a one-time project;
it’s a lifetime activity, done daily.

Hi Jill, This article was kismet. I started purging and organizing right after the holidays. Perhaps you or your readers have a suggestion as to what to do with tons of jewelry – mostly from QVC – both semi precious and fashion. Lot’s of Joan Rivers. I have a more casual lifestyle and don’t have a reason to use the jewelry any longer.
Marianne
You might try selling the semi precious and Joan Rivers on EBay. Have not done this myself but I would think it’s worth a try.

Thanks Marianne. I may have to go this route but I have so much it could become a full time job!
Alice
You might consider Dress For Success if you have one in your area.

Thanks Alice. We have something similar to Dress for Success where I live and donate there often. But when it comes to the semi precious jewelry, I want to try another route.

Yes, I also love your tips. I can get things done quickly but I procrastinate as well. My children still have things in their closets and they are in their 30s. Lol!! Going to tackle that this year. I’m so excited for what you are doing and wish you many years success.

Thanks Jill for your ideas. I started to organize my closet. Bought hangers from QVC and start going thru my clothes. Getting rid of the ones I don’t wear. Also went thru my purses getting rid of the ones I don’t use. Going to give them to the Goodwill. My closet is half way done, had to order more hangers waiting for them.

Hi Jill. Love the idea of a spice drawer, but I don’t have that much cash inet space. Medications… I thought it was Nation wide, but we have a drug drop off day at a couple of locations a few times a year. Can drop off expired or unused drugs. Also our local Walgreens has a drop off bin for everyday use. Socks…I need to pare down the number of pairs I have. I gave away or tossed 35 pair when I retired. Still have about 30-40 pairs. Oh my!! Holiday decorations… Christmas devor goes into red/green totes. Each tote has a number on the outside, and I list each tote on my computer with each item in that tote listed. Bigger items on my shelves with a separate list. The same for each holiday, but fall (orange totes), and Christmas the bulk of it. Overdone?? Yes, but I know where they are.

I’m going to start tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement to start.

After running out of room for my cookbooks, I browsed thru I ones I seldom used, cut out the recipes I wanted, put them in page protectors and placed them in a three ring binder. Next time I was at the salon, I brought the cookbooks for the stylists to put in the break room. They wfound new homes quickly.

I’m really enjoying what you are doing now Jill! Very informative.

Your story is my story! I am the great procrastinator! Sometimes I get an inspiration and go like a whirling dervish for a day. Then I sit on my laurels patting myself on the back and revel in my accomplishment. That spurt doesn’t happen again for a long time.
Your advice may work for me (let us pray). I will give it a try. Thanks for giving me a boost at the beginning of 2020! Love you pretty lady‼️

Clean your refrigerator door. Many of us have photos and magnets etc. Take everything down, clean the door, and decide what to replace.

Thanks Jill! I’m going to start a task today!!
