The 2020 NFL football season officially kicked off on Sept. 10 and while this year will look different than before, you can still find fun ways to safely celebrate with an at home tailgate!
I like to call it a “homegate” filled with everything you’d need for a day at the stadium. Set up some fun family games for everyone to enjoy and add some game day-inspired appetizers like chips and wings.
No matter your budget or creativity level, there’s a way you can make the most the season while cheering on your favorite team! (You bet I’ll be sporting my Philadelphia Eagles jersey!)

Game Day Recipes
You can’t have an at home tailgate without food to please your guests. Luckily, I have a few favorites that will have everyone begging for your recipe at the end of the night.
The name says it all — this Touchdown Chili Dip recipe is practically made for football season! It’s a definite crowdpleaser, it’s packed with flavor and it’s super simple to throw together. All you need are a couple of cans of beans, cream cheese, Roma tomatoes, jalapeños and a bag of Mexican-blend cheese. Serve it up with some tortilla chips and you’ll have everyone filled up by kick off!
Looking for a main course? Instead of whipping up a basic batch of wings, treat your guests to this Easy and Lite Buffalo Chicken Bake. The entire recipe serves four to six people and it doesn’t take too much skill. Plus, it puts a healthy spin on the typical buffalo chicken dip — but it’s just as flavorful!
Celebrate the win with these irresistible Best Ever Chocolate Chip Cookies. Cookies on game day? Why not! They’re a family-favorite and sure to please everyone in the room.
Instead of reaching into the cooler, my husband and kids like to create our own fizzy drinks with a SodaStream. This one is fairly affordable and super versatile. Plus, with a variety of flavors available, you can create everything from sparkling water to refreshing soda.
If you’d rather sip on something with a bit of a kick, I recommend my Wine-Melon Slushie recipe. You can even add some food coloring to the rim of sugar to match your team’s colors!
Fun Activities for the Family
While you could sit around and watch commercials during half time, we like to head outside to play some games! These activities are also a great way to keep the kids busy if they’re getting rambunctious while the teams are playing.
You can’t have a proper tailgate without a good game of cornhole and I found the perfect Wood Cornhole Board from Wayfair. Challenge your partner, your kids or the neighbors to a friendly (and slightly competitive) round that’s sure to come with some bragging rights.
This is one of the trendiest games to play at outdoor bars which makes it ideal for any home tailgate party. I think the best part about playing with this Giant Toppling Tower is the suspense… but the crash of the falling blocks is also a surefire contender.
Spikeball is one of my family’s favorite games to play in the backyard. I’d like to think I’m the best player, but my son thinks otherwise. No matter your skill set, it’s fun, interactive and gets everyone on their feet. I found the Spikeball Set above from Kohl’s and love that it comes with a drawstring bag for easy storage!
Decor to Top It All Off
Half of the fun of a home get-together is the decorations. With a few supplies and a little creativity, you can have a top-notch at home tailgate in no time.
If you haven’t heard of the Homesick candle brand you’re truly missing out. They have a whole collection of candles that are designed to remind you of your current city, hometown or favorite vacation destination! They also have this Football Candle that can take you back to those crisp Friday night lights.
Whether you’re trying to protect your newly cleaned carpet or want to add some bold color to your room, this All Star Football Rug is sure to do the trick. While it may not perfectly mimic the field you’re used to seeing, it’s a great alternative for your at home tailgate.
I’m a huge fan of melamine dishes because they won’t break — no matter how rowdy the party gets! This 12-Piece Dinnerware Set will add a vibrant addition to your football-filled night.
Top off your table setting with these festive Football Napkins I found on Amazon. Not only are they budget-friendly, they’re super versatile and can be used no matter who you’re cheering on!
Is this “Most Wonderful Time of the Year” Pillow not the most adorable decor piece you’ve seen? Despite the craziness of these times, it’s a great reminder to enjoy the moment (because fall is truly one of the best times of the year).
Navy, gold, red… no matter what color you’re sporting, this Tissue Tassel Garland will completely transform your room. I might get a few colors and repurpose them for birthday parties, baby showers or even themed family movie nights!
If you’re making use of your backyard, I recommend adding some excitement to your patio with these Outdoor Square Throw Pillows. They come in seven colors so you’re bound to find ones that go with your theme. They also have removable covers which will come in handy when some of that Touchdown Chili Dip gets messy.
I was browsing Bed Bath & Beyond and found these fun Square Seat Cushions that can give you an affordable way to decorate your backyard. Alabama fans? There’s a crimson option for you! Giants fans? Don’t worry, they have a royal blue too.
There’s no doubt I’ll miss heading to the Eagles’ stadium with my family this fall, but I still plan on making the most of the season despite the circumstances. For me, being with the ones I love is the most important part of cheering on my team. However, the tasty tailgate treats and festive decor are certainly welcome!
